How to use SSD5.5 with the Slate Digital VMS Mic Models (For owners of the Duality expansion)

NOTE: While the Duality expansion for SSD5.5/Trigger 2 was recorded with the Slate Digital ML-2 mics, please do note that Slate Audio (Raven and SSD/Trigger, VSX) and Slate Digital (All Access Pass, VMR, ML-1/2) are two separate companies.

NOTE: All-Access Pass subscribers will not be able to access the VMS Mic Model plugins unless they also own the physical Slate Digital ML Mic. Even though the All-Access Pass includes the VMS software, the license is only available for owners of the ML Mic.

The new Duality expansion for SSD5.5 and Trigger 2 was recorded with the Slate Digital ML-2 modelling mics. Users have the option of using the pre-mixed drums which are mix ready right out of the box, or using the raw drums and the Slate Digital Classic Instruments plugin to choose your own microphones.

SSD5.5 users who own the Slate Digital ML-2 mic and wish to use their Classic Instruments mic model plugin with the raw drums from Duality, will first need to configure SSD5.5 for multi-out routing.

1. Included below are links to articles on how to set up SSD5.5 in multi-out mode, in a variety of DAW's. Please first follow these instructions before moving on to the next step in this article.

Multi-Output in Cubase with SSD5

Multi-Output in Reaper with SSD5.5

Multi-Output in Luna with SSD5.5

Multi Output in Pro Tools with SSD5.5

Multi Output in Digital Performer with SSD5.5

Multi Output in Ableton Live with SSD5.5

Multi Output in Logic Pro X with SSD5.5

Once you have set up SSD5.5 for multi-out in your DAW, we can move on to the next step. In our example, we will be using Logic Pro to demonstrate.

2. Start by loading the Virtual Mix rack plug-in on the aux track you have your SSD kick routed to. Please note that VMR will appear under the "Slate Digital" manufacturer, unlike SSD5.5 which is under "Steven Slate".

3.  Next, click the "Mics" button in the VMR plug-in. In the case of Duality, you will want to load the "Classic Instruments" module, as this module was designed for the ML-2 mic that the raw Duality drums were recorded with.

Then, click the "Mics" button on the Classic Instruments module, and choose the desired mic.

4. Repeat this process for the rest of your SSD5 aux tracks.

Do I have to use Duality with the Classic Instruments module? Can I use the raw Duality drums with a mic model plug-in from a different company, or with the other Slate Digital Mic model plug-ins?

Users who own mic-modelling plug-ins from other companies than Slate Digital can certainly use these plug-ins with the raw Duality drums. However, this is not recommended as the VMS Classic Instruments module was designed specifically for the frequency response of the ML-2 mics. This also applies to the other Slate Digital mic model modules, as those were designed for the frequency response of the ML-1 and ML-1A mics.
